Nannas recipes in 4 sentences

My Nanna was a great cook. She was European, and used many ingredients that were not common in Australia back in the 1960s.

I loved her shady kitchen with it's enormous windows, overlooking the garden. She grew figs, bananas, strawberries by the mile...a week with Nanna was a treat to be anticipated and savoured on every level.

If I have one shining memory of her, and she passed away 45 years ago, it's of being enveloped in her warm embrace, breathing the scent of rosemary and vanilla, and always coming away with a bit of flour dust on my cheeks. To say she influenced me, and continues to do so, is an understatement.

Nanna used to recite her recipes off the top of her head if asked. Nobody ever wrote anything down, or if they did, it was on the back of an envelope or on a piece of scrap paper.

I'm resurrecting the Recipe in 4 Sentences. If it takes more than four sentences to write out, it's too hard and has no place in a family kitchen repertoire!

  5. I just had to check out Recipes in Four Sentences! Love it! Of course, my own have more than four sentences; but since you know what you're doing in the kitchen, you could probably "boil them down" to four sentences!

    1. Hello Jean, and thanks for stopping by. Most of my old recipes from Mum and Nanna, were just written on scraps of paper in passing, and much was left open to interpretation. Sewing patterns were the same...lol! It seems Mum and Nanna's generation just didn't need the whole blow by blow, ingredient by ingredient thing. Thanks for stopping by! Mimi xxx

  6. Hi Mimi, I am Chic Chick on SS. Thanks for the link to your blog and i'm looking forward to following you on Pinterest. I adore the 4 sentence concept. Now there is a recipe book, I'd buy. Even better with a photo of each dish. Thank you! I'm not sure how to change my profile here, so am just posting as anonymous.
