Farewelling friends....

 Mimi's Rock Cakes...source Simple Savings

Some of you know me from a money saving website here in Australia. If you do, you would be aware that they pay me for a newsletter contribution, and have done for some years. That bit of pocket money meant that I felt justified in supporting their very friendly forum, with long stretches of my personal time. It also meant that while there was a bit of extra pocket money attached, the family tolerated my long stints on the computer, playing in that forum :)

That site is now in review mode as they work out how to refresh their business, and their immediate chosen strategy, until they decide where to go next, is to release me from my paid writing commitment to their newsletter, to reinstate an old favourite contributor, who left some time ago after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing. They cannot, apparently, afford us both. The lady in question has been called 'a brilliant writer' hence her comeback, which I confess, stung a little. I never claimed to be a 'brilliant writer', but I always wrote from the heart.

This has been a blow to me as it's come without warning, effective immediately, and whilst I'll miss the money a little, I will miss the friendships, and what I felt I could do to help people see a life beyond poverty and struggle, more.

The way has been left open for me to return in an unpaid capacity whenever I like, but I know that would now be very difficult.

I am both sad and relieved. My own life has moved beyond penny pinching some time ago, and it's only when I return to the site in question, that I feel the savings gene kick in....lol. I deliberately played down our very wonderful trip last year, as I felt it was disrespectful to members who are struggling to pay the mortgage and put food on the table, to share too much. Likewise I do not speak of trips to the ballet, theatre or a plethora of wonderful activities in which we immerse ourselves, for the same reason. There is more to me than a 3 week rotating menu and shopping at Aldi ;-)

I've had a book in the works for some time now, and they have promised to help promote it, so this will free my time to focus on that project.

I will miss you all more than you can ever imagine. That forum has been a lifeline to me in so many ways over the years, and to be displaced through no wrongdoing on my own part, is very hard to take.

Anyone who would like to stay in touch can find me here, of course. Can I ask you, encourage you even, to steer anyone who notes my absence to A Tray of Bliss? They can also email me through here.

One door closes, and another one opens. I wonder what will come next?

With Love,

Mimi xxx

  2. I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how hurt you must be to have this come without warning and in such a callous way. (((((HUGS))))) I'm glad that you will still be posting here on your blog as I have enjoyed getting to know you and learn from you. Blessings upon you and your book venture!

  3. Mimi I always loved your section of the newsletter best! For what it's worth, I really enjoy reading about your travels and 'treats'. And not in a 'I wish I was there' way. Reading about the wonderful things you get up to reminds me that what I'm doing at this stage of my life will give me choices later on. I'm still very much in the young children, mortgage payment stage of life and there are days where it feels like what I do isn't getting us ahead at all. I love the way you write, your words have given me a boost on many occasions. I certainly think you are a brilliant writer!!! Thanks Mimi

  10. Oh dear, I am so sorry. Sorry for you, sorry for us, sorry for the forum. Blessing in your endeavours and I look forward to your book. I have always been amazed at your willingness to share and to genuinely want to help people improve their lives. I wondered if you were paid because you contributed so much, but I guessed if you were paid it wouldn't have been enough to recompense your time and effort. It is a shame that you won't be on there just as another member.

    1. Del, I was paid only for recipes. EVERYTHING else, every tip, lifestyle hint, sharing of knowledge and life experience, was done from my heart. All of it. I will be here. I've been here all along too. Feel free to visit and ask me anything, as often as you want. Much Love, Mimi xxx

    1. Hello Colleen dear friend. No I have left Simple Savings entirely. I have been so generous with my time and energy there for so long, and feel that whatever business decisions may have to be made, that my unwavering support, loyalty and sheer wealth of knowledge shared, might have given me some brownie points when it came to the crunch. I cannot however battle a long standing friendship where one friend is reaching out to help another in need. If I had to choose between a friend and a business colleague, I guess I would choose the friend too. We all must respect that. I'll be here. I won't be on SS. I'd love you to visit here anytime you like. I respond here just as quickly :) Love, Mimi xxx

  15. Dear Mimi,
You were truly the absolute best part of the forum and newsletter and so inspiring. I followed you faithfully and learned so so much from you. I never dreamed I would become your friend as I thought of you as a celebrity.
Having also suffered "the boot" lol along with Helen I can attest that it takes some getting over especially when you put so much blood sweat and tears into going beyond the call of duty in everyday to help people.
Be very proud of all you did and the people you inspired.
Your true followers and friends would follow you to the ends of the earth and certainly to here, your blog!
You have helped me in so many ways thank you. I am grateful for how I found you but now I know where to find you here and so I haven't lost anything but the forum has.

Re your book: I would be happy to help with promotion as I've recently completed a diploma in social media marketing and have been going great guns with my experiments on first Twitter and now Instagram (from zero to 1600+ followers in 14 days). I can also give you info on Facebook ads too - they are easy to do, cheap and highly targeted.

    1. I agree that they have under estimated your fan base!!

It seems that leopards don't change their spots either because they got rid of Penny Wise in a similar way not so long ago. I can't find her blog where she posted about it but at the time she was as shocked and reeling as you are now Mimi.

So I'm more than a bit surprised that she's gone back for more (I guess she needs the money going by her current blog posts). All I can say is "When people show you who they are, believe them" (Maya Angelou). This is really going to hurt their business in my opinion. Membership sites need their backbone members more than this crowd realise.

As for you Mimi, as much as it hurts you are now you are resilient and the world is your oyster. Can't wait to buy a copy of your book.

You are the one that has taught me so much. I use and appreciate all the hints and tips that I have gleaned from both you and Annabel.

My decision has been made that I will not renew my membership when it comes up - although having paid a five year membership that won't be until 2017. SS has become so drab.

I look forward to your book and will keep following your blog.

  49. Shocked but I guess not surprised as I remember this happening before, ironically to the other party that is now back. I too prefer your style of writing and think you gave so much more in terms of SOLUTIONS rather than problems. I read every thread you started as they were always thought provoking and helpful. You are pretty much the only reason I was still reading the forum so I too won't be renewing my membership. I think they have misread what their audience wants. I want solutions and thought provoking content, not whining about personal struggles. Your blog is always open on my tablet and I follow you on Facebook so I look forward to continuing to hear what you have to say. Not your typical gen Y xxx

    1. That's a very astute observation Gen Y. Solutions was always my goal. Anyone can complain about life dealing them a bad hand. Lord knows I had plenty of tough cards dealt to me. But to find a solution, and make it work. That's a skill. I hope I was able to help members find those solutions. That would make me very happy. Mimi xxx

  55. Oh Mimi, no no no - you are one of the mainstays of the forum, what on earth will we do without you? I always follow your external blog but look forward to ANY post at all from you on the forum. Sadness here, we'll miss you greatly. Sad that you have been 'released' from you 'duties' as I feel you contribute greatly to them and I can't see why the two of you can't share - your posts are very different to each other so there would be no clashing there. I think it's a very unwise move on their behalf - but it's our big loss. I for one will continue as always to follow your blog, and Annabel's too. I thank you for all your time you have poured into that forum. I haven't posted much, for lack of confidence, but I always greatly admired you and respected you. I often think of you when making decisions in my life and your guidance has led me to being so happy. How can I thank you for that?! You will be missed dreadfully, but that is their loss, not yours. 87. Everyone gets a turn eventually! C'mon haven't we all seen this happen to other firm favourites over the years? Are you all genuinely surprised?

Your paragraph below smacks of sour grapes. Feeling that way and not leaving speaks volumes.

"I am both sad and relieved. There is more to me than a 3 week rotating menu and shopping at Aldi ;-)"

    1. Who are you Anonymous? I always find it interesting that the rude comments aren't signed. We're not on SS now, and this is MY blog, so if you expect me to be gracious, forget it. Everyone else, you're about to see a side of me not often aired. YOU are rude and nasty. I think I know who you are. You've been here before and tried to spread your nastiness. I don't know how you could read anything I've said as sour grapes. You must have a really twisted view of the world and my contribution to Simple Savings and how much my OWN life has changed in the last nine years if you read 'sour grapes' into that comment. I remained respectful to other members who had the sorts of financial struggles that I have had for most of my life, by playing down the good things that I am now able to enjoy. Sounds like sour grapes from your side if you ask me. What a spiteful soul you are. I'd be a pretty poor example of how to save money if I was still moaning and whingeing about stuff, nearly ten years down the track wouldn't I. I don't even know what your comment is meant to achieve, other than to belittle the other 90 or so supporters who have made their way here, and the 100+ more who have emailed me privately, as a measure of support and respect for all I have contributed to the forum over the last decade. Which I'm sure YOU know is substantial to say the least. What have YOU contributed other than your own version of sour grapes. I bet you're puckering right now. As for 'everyone getting a turn eventually', that's a bit rude and disrespectful to all concerned, isn't it? Fiona Lippey has done what she needed to do, and so have I. As did those who have had their season or reason for being in the forum before me. Don't bother coming back for another comment. I won't publish the next one. Begone wicked Sprite. Spread your evil somewhere else.

    2. Thankyou Lea. SS might have to tolerate the nasty naysayers of the world because they pay to be there. 90. Just bookmarked your blog. This has made my decision to not renew quite easy. Your threads were amongst only a handful I read after many years... I got tired of starting posts and commenting and getting judgemental comments in return that the last few years I have only read a few posts. You have always been amongst my favourite a and your recipes grace my table many times. I have many Mimi recipes printed out and bound, including your original books, and refer to them often. In the last few years I have really enjoyed how your posts have changed and matured with a change in life, I have related closely to it both having older boys and younger daughters close in age to your children, and a dancer to boot in the mix.

  94. Hello Mimi,
I also comment very little on SS but have so enjoyed all your contributions. I know the forum will not be the same, you were the main stimulator of so many interesting threads and discussions, ever willing to help and always gracious. The type of person I wish I had as a friend.
God bless you in your future endeavours.
    Love, Ronniie

  95. Hi Mimi
I wanted to tell you how sorry I am and that even though I didn't post a lot at SS I usually visit most days. One of the ways that you have made an impact on my life is that I have started to use my beautiful tea cups that I never used. I have a beautiful tea set that was given to me By my mum and also some trios that were given to me, one from my late nana another from my late mother in law and another from a friend who knows how much I love pretty things. I never used them before because they were "too good". anyway thank you for all that you gave and continue to give and know that when I am making a cup of tea you often pop into my head.

    1. Oh Rough Diamond, I am thrilled to hear this. All the tiny things that we can do to improve our quality of life, even when money is scarce, really do make a difference. I bet your late Mother-in-Law and Nana would be thrilled. Just because something is functional, doesn't mean it has to be ugly. That's my mantra. And anything that is beautiful AND functional, gets pride of place in my home. Teacups and saucers are a gorgeous example. I use mine every single day. A different one for each cup of tea, and that amounts to quite a few in a day. I rinse them, dry them and put them away again, as soon as I've finished my cuppa. Do you do that too? I'm proud of you. 96. I honestly don't know why people have to be so nasty. I absolutely love your blog. I don't know you but from what I read you sound kind, thoughtful and in fact a lovely person. Of course our lives change. Yes, we get more money, more opportunities to do more things BUT I know that however much things change we never forget those times when we had nothing. Carry on writing and I'll carry on enjoying. Ronnie, London. (England) x

    1. Ronnie, what a wonderful observation from you. Yes. However things might change, the hard times shape who we are, and remembering when we had little, helps us appreciate when life is abundant. Thankyou for your lovely comment. Love, Mimi xxx
